Dave Sittler had a column in today’s Tulsa World on whether Mike Gundy would again call the offensive plays for the OSU football team this fall.
If you’ll remember, ESPN made a HUGE deal in last year’s Missouri game of how, instead of watching the defense, Gundy would go sit on an equipment truck and go over sets and strategy with the offense. As the head coach.
Sittler quotes an unnamed former coach on Gundy’s decision last year to call his own plays:
A former successful college head coach, whose name won’t be revealed to protect the innocent, hopes Gundy decides to remain on the sideline watching OSU’s defense instead of retreating to a seat where he maps out the next offensive series.
“There are a lot of really good things that Mike’s doing,” said the coach, who is one of Gundy’s staunchest supporters. “But when you are trying to win the game on defense and he’s over there on the sideline drawing up plays and talking to the offense, I think that loses a little luster as far as the cohesiveness of your team.”
I will let Big Al Jerkens tea bag both me and my mother if that coach is not Pat Jones.
ANYWAY … I don’t think Gundy should call his own plays next year. The games I went to, watching Gundy on the sidelines was painful. He couldn’t complain about calls or bitch at the refs or manage the clock because he had to stare at that GD clipboard the whole team, flipping through laminated pages and staring vacantly at the field.
Meanwhile the back-up quarterbacks are holding up colored signs and going through elaborate hand signals like a pair of mimes in Central Park. You can’t argue with the success of the offense. But you can’t help but wonder if the DEFENSE might perform a little better if the head coach was, you know, watching the game. I know Gundy can view tape later and has complete confidence in his coaches, blah blah blah. But Switzer would smoke heaters and cuss the refs during the game, not make love with a clipboard, and it worked out okay for him.
Why have an offensive coordinator if you’re going to call the plays anyway? Just have Dez go long all year.
